Top Causes of Boating Accidents in California

Posted on in Catastrophic Injuries

California accident lawyer, California injury attorneyWarmer weather and longer days mean more opportunities to enjoy California’s scenic waterways. With more boats on the water, it should come as no surprise that recreational boating accidents rates are highest in the summer months.

In 2016, the month with the most boating accidents was July followed by August and June, respectively. The hours between 2 and 6 p.m. were when the most accidents occurred.

These accidents can cause a tremendous amount of property damage and bodily injury, and if you were not at fault you should not be required to pay for these expenses yourself. An attorney familiar with boating accident claims can help you get the compensation you are entitled to under the law.

Recreational Boating Accident Statistics

The good news is that the waterways have gotten safer over the past decade.

In 2007, California reported:

  • 804 accidents;
  • 482 injuries;
  • 55 deaths; and
  • $10,643,800 in property damage.

Within the past ten years, 2012 is considered one of the safest on record with:

  • 473 accidents;
  • 247 injuries;
  • 53 deaths; and
  • $5,794,000 in property damage.

It should be noted that since 2007, the year with the fewest fatalities was 2013 with 38 deaths. Also, 2011 had the least amount of property damage reported with $2,142,655.

More recently, however, these numbers have begun to show that more accidents and more injuries are occurring. In 2016, there were:

  • 588 accidents;
  • 266 injuries;
  • 50 deaths; and
  • $3,911,886 in property damage.

Causes of Recreational Boating Accidents

The following were reported as the most common causes of boating accidents:

  • Operator inattention;
  • Operator inexperience;
  • Excessive speed;
  • Machinery failure;
  • Passenger or skier behavior;

Types of Bodily Injury that May Be Sustained

While most boats have some safety features, drivers and passengers are generally vulnerable to injury in the event of an accident.

Broken bones, fractures, and soft tissue damage are all painful injuries that may be sustained. Head injuries caused by an impact to the skull or from lack of oxygen in the event of drowning can be life-changing and expensive to treat.
