Do Your Chores Or Face The Consequences

Posted on in Personal Injury

"You can't play outside until you get your homework done."

"No TV until you have swept the garage."

"If you don't shovel that walk, consider yourself grounded."

Parents have a way of providing incentive for getting chores done. So do premises liability laws.

You could face a personal injury lawsuit if you fail to take care of your grown-up chores around your property. This has the potential to result in far more serious damages than any grounding or lecture your parents dished out.

Property Owners Are Responsible For Maintaining Safe Premises

We don't have much to worry about here in terms of snow and ice, so consider yourself off the hook for shoveling the walk. However, you are responsible for items such as:

  • Providing adequate lighting
  • Making sure sidewalks and steps are reasonably level
  • Removing tripping hazards
  • Ensuring stair railings are adequately secured

For hazards that are not removed, you are required to provide warning. This includes posting signs such as "Beware of Dog" or clearly marking trip-hazards.

If people are injured as a result of a safety condition you should have been aware of, you could be held responsible for damages such as medical costs, pain and suffering, and lost earnings.

Damages will most likely be paid by your homeowners insurance or your business' insurance policy, but it will still cost you in the form of increased insurance premiums if a suit results in a settlement or verdict.
