Dog Bites Result in Serious Injuries

Posted on in Personal Injury

Dog attacks can be serious leaving both emotional and physical damage to the victim. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 4.5 million people are bitten by a dog each year. Of these, 20% require medical attention. Reconstructive surgery is required by over 27,000 people. These statistics indicate that dog bites are common and can be serious.

The dog owner is often liable for the dog bite. If the dog has previously exhibited violent behavior, the owner can be held responsible for the attack. Violent behavior includes:

  • Gnarling
  • Baring teeth
  • Growling
  • Lunging at people

The homeowners insurance, for the dog owner, typically pays for the damages caused by the dog bite. In fact, in 2013 approximately one-third of homeowners liability claims were for dog bites.

How can you avoid becoming a victim of a dog bite? We suggest you consider the following tips:

  • Don't approach an unknown animal. Ask the owner permission before you approach the animal. Teach your children not to approach a strange animal without permission.
  • If you must approach a house with an unknown animal, pay attention to their demeanor as you approach. An aggressive animal will put their ears back, show their teeth and/or growl. Be aware of these signs and move away from any animal exhibiting them.
  • Don't antagonize an animal even if they seem friendly. Picking up a stick to throw for a dog may seem like a good idea, but the dog may perceive the stick as a threat and attack.

If you or a loved one has been the victim of a dog bite, you may be facing a lengthy emotional and physical recovery. Contact us so we can help you attain the settlement you deserve.
