Employment-Woman Wins $18 Million Verdict in a Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

Posted on in Employment

A Swedish woman recently won an $18 million jury verdict in a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against her former boss. According to the lawsuit against the owner of the New York Global Group, he frequently coerced her into sexual encounters, and fired her from her job after discovering that she had a boyfriend.

The 25-year-old young woman had claimed $850 million in damages in her harassment and retaliation lawsuit in which she accused Benjamin Wey of using his power and position as the chief of the New York Global Group to force her into sexual encounters. She alleges that she had several sexual encounters with him, and was fired from her a job after Wey found out about her boyfriend living with her in an apartment that Wey had rented for her.

A jury in Manhattan has awarded her $16 million in punitive damages, and $2 million in compensatory damages. The lawsuit alleged sexual harassment, defamation and retaliation. However, the jury rejected claims of assault and battery. The defamation claims alleged that Wey posted derogatory posts about her on his blog in which he called her an “extortionist,” a “loose woman,” and “streetwalker”.

Allegations of sexual harassment are not always easy to prove. Very often, these claims are filed against people who are in higher positions of authority, and have access to resources to fight off these allegations easily. If you are currently facing sexual harassment in the workplace, or have been fired from your job for complaining about sexual harassment or discrimination in the workplace, speak immediately with a California employment lawyer and determine your legal rights.
