Fifteen Fatal Car Accidents in Only Four Months Have San Jose Police on Alert

Posted on in Personal Injury

San Jose car accident attorneys, fatal car accidents, not wearing a seat belt, car safety, traffic enforcementSanta Clara County residents have become accustomed to hearing about traffic accidents in the local news. A recent crash that occurred in mid April 2018 was unique in that the driver was occupying a stolen vehicle. It also stood out for being the 15th fatal car accident to occur since the beginning of the year. These numbers are alarming, both for traffic safety officials and drivers in the area.

What Makes Some Car Accidents so Deadly?

On April 11, 2018, ABC 7 News reported on a fiery single vehicle car accident in San Jose that left the driver dead and two passengers with life threatening injuries. The crash occurred at 1:20 a.m. on West San Carlos Street near Bird Avenue, when a man driving a stolen Hyundai lost control of the vehicle.

Headed west, the vehicle ended up crossing over the eastbound lanes before hitting a curb, rolling over, and catching fire. The driver was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital, while two teenage passengers in the back seat suffered life threatening injuries.

The crash holds the distinction of being the 15th fatal car accident in San Jose since the beginning of 2018. Sixteen people in total have died as the result of these collisions.

The following common causes can make certain car accidents more deadly than others:

  • Speeding and going too fast for conditions;
  • Driving while intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication;
  • Running red lights or stop signs;
  • Falling asleep behind the wheel; and
  • Being distracted by cellphones, GPS, or even other passengers in the vehicle.

Not wearing a seat belt also increases your car accident fatality risks. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), using a seat belt every time you are in your vehicle can reduce your fatality risks by half.

What Law Enforcement Is Doing to Combat Fatal Accidents

According to crash mapping provided by the City of San Jose, dozens of fatal car accidents have been recorded in our area since 2011. What makes 2018 significant is the sheer number of deaths due to these accidents that have occurred in just a few short months. To combat these collisions, law enforcement and public safety officials are doing the following:

  • Increasing speed traps and stepping up traffic enforcement efforts;
  • Implementing changes to infrastructure designed to make car accidents in general less likely to occur; and
  • Increasing public awareness of the importance of wearing seatbelt and of avoiding driving behaviors such as drunk or distracted driving.
