iPhones to Block Texts While Driving

Posted on in Personal Injury

California injury lawyer, California accident attorneyA future release of the operating system that runs on iPhones will feature a “Do Not Disturb While Driving” function. This feature will stop drivers from being able to access texts and many apps on smartphones.

The new feature is designed to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents caused by distracted driving. The new function will be rolled out in Apple's iOS 11.

How Will the New Function Work?

The program is activated when an iPhone is connected to the car through Bluetooth or a cable or if the car is in motion. The program will withhold any notifications that would normally appear on your phone, such as texts or news alerts.

There is an option for automatic response to be sent to anyone texting you that will say that you are driving and cannot respond. The program will also lock a driver out of most other apps that may be installed on the phone.

Certain map apps will be able to be accessed, however, a driver will be unable to input a destination. Passengers in the car can opt out of the program.

Distracted Driving Leads to Car Accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, eight people die every day in car accidents involving distracted driving. Some experts believe that the number of accidents caused by cell phone texting and web use is greatly underreported.

Smartphones are just one source of distracted driving. Eating, putting on makeup, and in-dash radio and navigation systems can all be sources of distraction to drivers.

Additionally, even using your smartphone through a hands-free headset can cause drivers to not pay full attention to the road.

Contact a San Jose, CA Car Crash Attorney

If you have been injured in a car accident where you do not believe you were at fault, you should contact an attorney who will work to get you the monetary compensation you are entitled to under law.

You have a limited time to bring your car accident suit. Even if you are trying to settle with an insurance company, the clock will still be ticking.

Because car accident claims are considered negligence cases, in most situations you have two years from the date of the accident to bring a lawsuit or your suit will not be heard by a court. For this reason, it is important to speak to an attorney as soon as possible so that there is time to develop your case and make the best arguments to the court based on your specific facts.
