Motor Vehicle Accidents Put First Responders at Risk

Posted on in Personal Injury

b2ap3_thumbnail_first-responders-San-Jose.jpgPolice, firefighters, emergency medical service providers, and other first responders put their lives on the line each day as part of their jobs. As a result, they suffer high numbers of injuries due to work-related accidents. Motor vehicle crashes and collisions are a common occupational hazard in these fields and can result in serious and potentially life threatening injuries. While some are due to the reckless actions of onlookers or other motorists on the road, the stress and distractions that occur behind the scenes can make these incidents more likely to occur.

Police Officer Injured After Vehicle Accident Near San Jose

According to reports from ABC 7 News, a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer suffered serious injuries as the result of being struck by a motorized vehicle just outside San Jose on July 27, 2018. The incident occurred in the early morning hours on Clayton Road, as the officer responded to reports of a traffic accident.

The unidentified CHP officer arrived at the scene to find a disabled motorized cart being towed away by another vehicle. As the officer approached, the driver performing the tow abruptly stopped what he was doing, left his car, and fled the scene. In the process, the motorized cart came loose and rolled backwards, colliding with the police officer and his highway patrol vehicle. The report claims the driver has not been identified or apprehended. The CHP officer was immediately transported to a local hospital, but his injuries were not reported as life threatening.

First Responder Transportation Accidents

While the circumstances surrounding the accident near San Jose were out of the ordinary, transportation accidents involving first responders are a common occurrence. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), they are the second leading cause of death among law enforcement officers, and a common cause of serious personal injuries.

The reckless actions of other drivers on the road and at the scene of crashes and collisions frequently put police, firefighters, EMS workers, and others at risk. One of the biggest problems is drivers who fail to yield. This includes:

  • Failure to stop or pull over in traffic;
  • Not yielding at intersections when an emergency responder is approaching; and
  • Disregarding lane closures and getting too close to accident scenes.

In addition, a first responder's job is demanding and stressful, and he or she often find himself or herself in vehicles rushing to get to accident and crime scenes. Speeding, being distracted by dashboard devices and calls from dispatchers, and extreme stress can all make job-related motor vehicle accidents more likely to occur.
