San Jose motorcycle accident attorneys, motorcycle accidents, motorcycle safety gear, motorcycle safety course, defensive driving techniquesThe late spring and summer months are perfect for motorcycle riding in San Jose, but bikers of all ages and experience levels are urged to use caution. A recent string of motorcycle accidents in our area emphasizes the need for safety and the importance of knowing proper defensive driving techniques.

Motorcycle Safety in San Jose

The NBC Bay Area affiliate recently reported on a fatal motorcycle accident in San Jose, which is one of several major crashes involving bikers that have occurred in our area over recent months. In April 2018, a motorcyclist was killed on Blossom Hill Road and Judith Avenue in south San Jose, after losing control of his bike and colliding with a car stopped in traffic in front of him. The biker, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

This tragedy emphasizes the importance of wearing the appropriate safety gear when riding, which can reduce your risk of fatal injuries if a crash does occur. In addition to a helmet, riders are advised to wear the following:

  • Long pants and long-sleeved shirts, to reduce the risk of burns or ‘road rash’ in the event the bike tips over;
  • Boots or other sturdy closed toe shoes, in the event you need to use your feet to stop or slow the motorcycle manually;
  • Sunglasses or goggles, to reduce glare and the risk of flying debris from the road; and
  • Riding gloves, which can help you have a better grip on the steering wheel.

In addition to making sure you have the right riding gear, take the time to ensure your motorcycle is properly maintained. Check the tires, brakes, and fluid levels to avoid malfunctions or potential breakdowns, which increase your risk of being involved in a crash.

Protecting Yourself Against Motorcycle Accidents

Investing the time and money in taking a motorcycle training course is a smart idea. It can increase your overall safety on the roads while potentially reducing your insurance costs. Plenty of private companies in our area provide these course, as does the California Highway Patrol.

These classes can help to hone your riding skills and provide tips for handling various road, traffic and weather conditions. Along with taking an approved driver education course, the following are some simple safety tips you can utilize now to help reduce your motorcycle accident risks:

  • Watch your speed and avoid going too fast for conditions;
  • Avoid driver distractions and keep your eyes on the road and be alert to other vehicles around you at all times;
  • Avoid aggressive driving behaviors, such as tailgating or making improper turns; and
  • Do not ride if you are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or prescription and over the counter medications. If you plan on drinking, make arrangements for getting a ride home.
