Multi-Vehicle Bus Accident Blocks Interstate in San Jose

Posted on in Personal Injury

CA injury lawyerHeavy traffic conditions, such as those common during rush hour in the Bay Area, make car accidents more likely to occur. As cars stretch bumper to bumper and drivers get increasingly frustrated by the wait, minor mistakes can end up causing major damages. A recent collision involving multiple cars and a busload of prison inmates left numerous injuries and blocked a major interstate in San Jose for hours.

Bus Full of Inmates Involved in Multi-Vehicle Collision

Rush hour traffic on a recent Thursday morning in San Jose came to a grinding halt when a multi-vehicle collision closed all southbound lanes on one of the areas major arteries. The accident involved several cars as well as a bus carrying more than 30 inmates being transported from the Elmwood Correctional Facility to the Santa Clara County Hall of Justice in San Jose.

The scene itself was chaotic, as one of the cars involved burst into flames. As a result, traffic was blocked in all directions for several hours. Once victims were taken to local hospitals and inmates were transferred to another bus, California Highway Patrol was eventually able to open up one northbound lane. There is no word yet on the severity of the injuries or the exact causes of the crash. In situations such as these, it is likely that multiple drivers will share at least a portion of the blame.

What to Do in a Multi-Vehicle Collision

Conditions are ripe for multi-vehicle collisions on major highways and interstates throughout the San Jose area. To avoid being a victim in this type of crash, consider the following tips:

  • Keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel at all times. It only takes being distracted for a second to cause a car crash, especially in bumper to bumper traffic;
  • Avoid tailgating other drivers. Leave at least a three-second space between your own car and the driver in front of you;
  • Go slow. Even when traffic does start to pick up, avoid accelerating too quickly. Frequent stops make rear accidents more likely; and
  • Look at what is going on ahead. Scan what is going on beyond the car in front of you. This can provide important clues on defensive actions you may need to take.

In the event you are involved in a multi-vehicle collision, notify law enforcement immediately. Remain in your vehicle or stand at the far side of the road until help arrives. Make sure to get the names, contact and insurance information for all drivers involved, which you will need when filing a claim.
