NFL Cheerleaders File Minimum Wage Lawsuit

Posted on in Employment

More cheerleaders are taking legal action against the teams that pay them to dance and cheer athletes, suing for minimum wages. The lawsuit was recently filed by a cheerleader for the Cincinnati Bengals team, and accuses the team of paying her less than minimum wage. A similar lawsuit was also recently filed against the Oakland Raiders.

You don't expect to see cheerleaders linked to an employment lawsuit. The job looks like it is much more fun than it should be. Cheerleaders are always beautifully dressed in full make-up and hair, and seem to have a great time dancing on the job. However, behind scenes, it is a different story. These women are often required to be up in the early hours of the morning, and spend several hours of make-up and hair, before they finally make their appearance on the field. Dancing and cheering can go on for four hours or more non-stop. However, according to the cheerleaders, who recently filed minimum wage lawsuits against the Oakland Raiders and the Cincinnati Bengals, what they are actually paid amounts to exploitation.

The Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader, who has recently filed a lawsuit against her team, is the second National Football League cheerleader to resort to legal action. According to the lawsuit, her hourly wages are less than minimum wage. The lawsuit alleges that the wages that she's currently being paid are less than the minimum wage in California, where the minimum is eight dollars an hour. In January, another cheerleader had filed a class-action lawsuit against the Oakland Raiders, alleging wage theft. Last week, her fellow Raiderette joined the class-action lawsuit.

The Oakland Raiders lawsuit had created ripples within the cheerleader community, which is not typically known for taking action against powerful teams based on minimum wages and unemployment benefits.
