Protecting Yourself Against Motorcycle Accidents in San Jose

Posted on in Personal Injury

motorcycle accidents, San Jose motorcycle accident attorneys, traffic accidents, motorcycle safety, traffic crash reportsWith summer rapidly approaching, increasing numbers of motorcyclists will be on the road. Whether you ride as a primary form of transportation or more as a recreational activity, this increased traffic makes motorcycle accidents more likely to occur. To help you protect yourself and your fellow riders, we have gathered some important information about motorcycle safety in the San Jose area and tips on how to make accidents less likely to occur.

San Jose Motorcycle Accidents and Injuries

According to the latest available statistics from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), there were close to 200 motorcycle accidents in San Jose throughout 2015. Based on OTS rankings, this makes it safer for riders here than in other, similarly sized communities. Unfortunately, when you broaden the focus to surrounding Santa Clara County, including towns such as Los Altos, Cupertino, Palo Alto, and Mountain View where local bikers often spend a large chunk of time riding or passing through, the statistics paint a different and more dangerous picture.

OTS reports that over the course of 2015, there were nearly 500 motorcycle accidents throughout Santa Clara County, ranking it 35th out of 58 similarly sized areas. Based on traffic crash reports, it is more dangerous here for motorcyclists than it is for car, trucks, or even pedestrians. Among the leading causes of accidents and injuries are speeding and driving under the influence, along with other dangerous behaviors such as distracted driving or not following traffic rules and regulations.

Protect Yourself While Riding

As a responsible motorcyclist, it is important to be aware of potential dangers on the road and how to avoid them. This includes knowing where motorcycle accidents and injuries in San Jose are most likely to occur. The San Jose Police Department offers an online map that is frequently updated, to show exactly what section of town fatal collisions have recently occurred, based on the date and the type of motorist.

Along with being aware of potential dangers, it is important to practice motorcycle safety. Moving into the summer months, follow these tips recommended by State Farm:

  • Choose the right gear: Wear sturdy, closed toe shoes or invest in motorcycle boots and make sure your arms and legs are protected with long sleeve shirts and jeans;
  • Wear a helmet: In addition to being required by law, motorcycle helmets cut serious injury risks in half;
  • Use caution when approaching intersections: This is where half of all motorcycle accidents occur.
  • Avoid alcohol or any intoxicating substance: If you are on medication or planning on drinking, let someone else take the wheel.
  • Check weather reports: Weather in our area changes suddenly. Keep an eye out and avoid riding in heavy fog or rain.
