Red Light Running Leading Cause of Car Accidents and Injuries

Posted on in Catastrophic Injuries

CA accident lawyerCar accidents generally occur due to reckless driving on the part of other motorists. Failure to follow traffic rules and regulations puts everyone at risk and one of the most dangerous driving behaviors is running red lights. To raise awareness, a national group has designated the first full week in August as National Stop On Red Week. The following highlights what you need to know to keep yourself and your passengers safe.

National Stop on Red Week

The National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR) is partnering with local and federal traffic safety agencies in sponsoring Stop on Red Week August 5 through 11, 2019. The goal is to educate the public about the dangers of red-light running and how it most commonly occurs. Disregarding red lights and other traffic signals may be something you associate with drivers who routinely flaunt the law and public safety. The fact is red-light running is a common behavior among those who are otherwise safe and law-abiding drivers.

How many times have you approached an intersection when the light was yellow and stepped on the gas to catch it before it changed to red? According to the NCSR, roughly half of all drivers admit to doing this and one in four do so on a regular basis. Running a yellow light or going through as it turns red is often just as dangerous and likely to result in a car accident. Other important facts about red-light running include:

  • It is the most common type of car accident in urban areas.
  • Roughly 20 percent of all crashes involve running red lights or disregarding other traffic signals.
  • As a result of speeding to get through a light, the force of impact tends to be greater and injuries more severe.
  • In addition to endangering other motorists, red-light running puts bicyclists and pedestrians at risk as well.

Preventing Intersection Accidents

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) warns that red-light running is a common problem in larger metropolitan areas, such as San Francisco and the Bay Area. Resulting in dangerous T-bone and side-impact collisions, it is a leading cause of traffic deaths and disabling injuries. To help reduce your risk of being involved in this type of crash, follow these tips:

  • Avoid the temptation to speed up if you see a light changing from green to yellow. If it is already at yellow, slow to a stop.
  • Be wary of other drivers when crossing intersections. Even if you have the light, be alert for drivers who may not be paying attention or who may disregard their signal.
  • Avoid getting too impatient waiting for a light to change from red to green. Give pedestrians plenty of time to cross and watch for drivers from other directions racing to get through the light.
