Residents Take to the Streets to Prevent San Jose Pedestrian Accidents

Posted on in Personal Injury

San Jose motor vehicle accident attorneys, pedestrian accidents, motor vehicle accidents, traffic fatalities, pedestrian safetyTo reduce the city’s high pedestrian fatality rate, San Jose sponsors workshops throughout the area to get citizen feedback. In these workshops, neighborhood residents often take to the streets, with an eye towards identifying conditions that make motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians more likely. While road studies and crash reports provide quantitative data, San Jose hopes getting a more personal look at problem areas will help to target changes that need to be made.

Pedestrian Accidents In San Jose

Statistics from the San Jose Police Department show a high rate of motor vehicle related pedestrian accidents. Overall, traffic fatalities have more than doubled since 2010. Moreover, of the reported 60 traffic deaths that occurred in 2015, close to half involved pedestrians.

Key factors which they claim are typically involved in these accidents include the following:

  • Jaywalking and failing to cross at controlled intersections;
  • Being distracted and not paying attention to surrounding conditions;
  • Poor visibility at night and wearing dark, non-light reflective clothing;
  • Walking under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
  • Crossing non-residential streets and large highways.

While it is important for pedestrians to take the necessary steps to help protect themselves, there are plenty of factors that contribute to pedestrian accidents which are beyond their control. These include a lack of sidewalks and designated areas for crossing streets, as well as the reckless driving behaviors of motorists. This includes speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence.

San Jose Vision Zero Community Workshop

Infrastructure plays a major role in protecting the safety of pedestrians, and the San Jose Vision Zero program seeks to address potential problem areas. The program focuses on what it claims are the 4 Es of traffic safety:

  • Evaluations, using crash data to identify problematic traffic locations;
  • Engineering, which should focus on protecting road users;
  • Enforcement, to target traffic law violations;
  • Education, which raises awareness of potential dangers in the community.

Vision Zero workshops seek direct involvement by community residents, who are among those most immediately affected. A September 2017 Mercury News report highlighted a recent event at the Cambrian Branch Library, which involved public education along with participants taking to the streets to identify potential safety concerns.

As they walked along Hillsdale Avenue, one of a dozen streets targeted through the Vision Zero program in District 9, they observed areas which could jeopardize pedestrians that should be addressed. These include the behaviors of motorists, the number and types of traffic signs, the distances between crosswalks, and obstructions which limited visibility, such as trees and utility poles.
