Scooters Become More Integral to Transportation; Concerns Linger Over Injuries

Posted on in Personal Injury

CA injury lawyerIn San Jose and other major cities, scooters have been increasingly embraced as a fun hobby and a fast, convenient form of transportation. While they become even more widespread in use and integrated into the transportation system, there continue to be reports regarding potentially serious accidents and personal injuries  which are raising concerns. San Jose officials are the latest to threaten a ban, claiming the scooters are a menace to both motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic and generally jeopardize public safety.

Google Maps Integrating Scooters in App

Google recently announced that it would begin integrating Lime scooters and bikes into its existing Map application, making it easier for users to locate the nearest shared vehicle. Lime will now take its place alongside ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft. Not only will this help to increase convenience for Lime Users, but it should also serve to increase the number of people using the motorized scooters both for entertainment as well as for travel purposes.

Google is rolling out the Lime integration in 13 major cities, including San Jose and other metropolitan areas throughout California where Lime scooters are currently in use. Other U.S. locations include Austin and San Antonio, Texas, Scottsdale, Arizona, Baltimore, Maryland, and Seattle, Washington. Lime is also catching on overseas and can now be easily located through Google Maps in Auckland, New Zealand and in Brisbane, Australia. While it is good news for the company and its users, there are those that have serious concerns about potential safety issues.

San Jose Officials Threaten to Ban Lime Scooters

Just as Lime scooters continue to increase in popularity, local officials in San Jose are threatening to ban the shared vehicles over concerns about rider and traffic safety. City officials are saying that the company itself needs to take steps to increase safety and better monitor the vehicles.

The mayor of San Jose is urging Lime to implement safety procedures and to uncover ways to keep the scooters off city sidewalks, where they pose a danger to pedestrians. Among the suggestions include:

  • Incorporate geo-fencing properties, such as those used to keep shopping carts from being taken away from stores;
  • Use GPS triggered kill switches, which would disable a scooter if it is located on a sidewalk or other densely populated area;
  • Mandate that they are parked properly, rather than just being dropped on sidewalks or on streets;
  • Restrict use to bike lanes, where scooter users will face fewer hazards from other motor vehicles.

Without these changes, San Jose could be the latest in a line of cities to ban Lime scooters completely.
