Sexual Harassment Is Widespread in Medical Profession

Posted on in Employment

According to a new book, sexual harassment targeting women is widespread in the medical profession. The author goes as far as to recommend that women avoid taking up medicine, as a profession.

The book was released in Australia recently, and is written by a surgeon, who also earlier authored a book on gender equality. She issues a warning to women to avoid entering the healthcare profession, because of the widespread sexual harassment targeting females.

According to her, the only way that female surgeons can protect their careers in the healthcare industry, is to simple comply with requests from male colleagues for sex. She believes that simply giving in is a much safer option for them than to report the harassment.

Her book releases at a time when more women than ever are entering the medical profession. However, her book spotlights a disturbing trend - women are not only being sexually harassed in the medical profession in that country, but also often find themselves wrongfully retaliated against, when they report harassment.

The author points to the case of one young, brilliant medical intern who was assaulted by a professor, and reported the case. She won her case, but since she reported the harassment has had her career ruined, because she dared to report the harassment.

The book has stirred up a controversy in Australia, especially for the author's comments that it is often better to simply give in to sexual advances, than report it.

In the United States, there are laws against sexual harassment that can easily be resorted to. If you are being harassed in the workplace, and have been retaliated against by your employer or anyone else in the workplace, speak to a California employment lawyer. You may have grounds for a sexual harassment claim.
