SNL Alum Chris Kattan Charged With DUI

Posted on in DUI

Earlier this month, former "Saturday Night Live" star Chris Kattan was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

Police accounts of the incident indicate that Kattan was driving erratically down the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles around 2 a.m. When police arrived at the scene, he had evidently struck a parked car and was standing or wandering around the scene of the accident. Police said he displayed signs of being under the influence of some kind of substance, including red, watery eyes and an unsteady gait.

Witnesses who saw the incident told tabloids that Kattan was also apparently muttering something about prescription medication after the incident.

Kattan was booked into a Los Angeles jail and was released a short time later. Evidently, he will be charged under a California law that makes driving under the influence of certain medications, rather than alcohol, an offense worthy of a DUI charge.

After the crash, Kattan sent out a message to his Twitter followers, indicating that he was "fine." He said he had been exhausted from a 15-hour flight around the country and seemed to imply that there was some sort of mix-up with his medication.

The reason we are mentioning this story is that it seems to do a good job of showing how a DUI charge can happen. People charged with DUI are often vilified or thought of as irresponsible monsters. If Kattan did have a mixup with his medication after extended travel, then it cannot really be said he made poor choices or mistakes; rather, he fell victim to a set of circumstances.

If you are ever charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drunks, you absolutely must take these allegations seriously. Being cavalier or thinking this situation will resolve itself on its own would be a very grave mistake.

One way to make sure you are responding appropriately is to hire a criminal defense attorney who has a background in DUI defense . Such an attorney will be able to help make sure you're doing everything you can to fight the charges against you.
