Teen Driver Decals Don't Reduce Accident Risks

Posted on in Personal Injury

According to new research, states that require novice drivers to post identifying decals on their carsdon't necessarily see a reduction in the number of accidents involving novice drivers.

The decal campaign was launched in New Jersey in 2010, and requires novice drivers with a learner's permit, to have identifying decals posted on their vehicles. Those decals are pasted on the license plates of drivers driving with a learner permit.

The study however, found, that the campaign has not resulted in a reduction in the number of accidentsinvolving novice drivers. The point of having those reflective decals was to alert other drivers to the fact that there was an inexperienced motorist at the wheel. They were also designed to help police drivers identify that a novice driver was driving.

An analysis of data, however finds that the program has not necessarily reduced accident risks among drivers with learner permits in New Jersey. They also have not had any effect on the rate of citationsinvolving novice drivers in that state.

According to the researchers, it is likely that novice drivers are already in compliance with all of the various restrictions that apply to persons under the Graduated Driver's Licensing program. They already comply with restrictions on the number of passengers that they can have in their car and the number ofhours that they can drive at night. Therefore, there has been no impact on the decal program in this category of motorists. Since there was little room for improvement in the first place, the decals did not have an impactful effect on the crash risks in this age group.
