Posted on in Personal Injury

San Jose personal injury attorney, boating accidents, boating safety, boating and alcohol, reckless boatingNow that summer is here, many San Jose residents will likely take to the water. With ocean and bay temperatures hovering at less than 60 degrees, boating provides a way to enjoy a day out without having to grapple with a wetsuit. Unfortunately, the more people there are on area waterways, the greater potential for mishaps.

Boating accidents can easily result in drownings, and even otherwise minor collisions can cause end up resulting in serious personal injuries. Before heading out, be aware of the dangers and the steps you can take to protect yourself and your fellow passengers.

Boating Safety in San Jose

According to the state Division of Boating and Waterways, close to 600 boating accidents occur throughout California each year, with the majority of accidents taking place over the months of June, July, and August. In more than half of these cases, it was boater inexperience, inattention, or reckless behaviors which were to blame.

Whether you prefer the calm waters of Almaden Lake Park for pedal boating or take your own personal watercraft out into the ocean or one of the various bays, rivers, or lakes in the surrounding area, make safety a priority. Discover Boating recommends the following tips:

  1. Check the weather before you go. Be alert for wind, storms, or other conditions which could make the water choppy;

  2. Use a pre-departure checklist. This can help ensure you are ready and that no important tasks, equipment, or supplies get left behind;

  3. Play by the rules. Make sure you follow all California boating regulations, and avoid speeding and other reckless behaviors;

  4. Name someone as assistant skipper. An extra pair of hands and insider knowledge will come in handy in the event of adverse conditions or if something happens to you;

  5. Make a float plan. Always let someone know before you head out on the water. Give him or her information which can help in an emergency, such as your boat model, registration number, the number of people going with you, and your itinerary for the day;

  6. Keep life jackets handy. Make sure you have the appropriate number and size for your passengers, that they are easily accessible, and in good working condition; and

  7. Avoid alcohol. As the captain of your vessel, you want to avoid alcohol completely. Be mindful with guests to avoid over serving, which could make slips and falls more likely to occur.

Taking the time to learn basic skills can protect you in an emergency. Take a boating safety course every few years to brush up on your knowledge, and make sure you and all of your passengers are competent swimmers.
