It’s not uncommon for serious car accidents in the state of California to result in traumatic brain injuries. Unfortunately, leaving this condition go untreated can be extremely dangerous. It is important to be aware of the symptoms of this condition so that you can seek medical attention if you believe that you have it after being involved in an accident.

How does a traumatic brain injury occur?

While you know that motor vehicle accidents can result in traumatic brain injuries, it’s important to understand the specific causes. The most common are a bump, jolt or blow to the head. In the case of car accidents, TBIs usually happen because the person’s head is slammed into the steering wheel, windshield or seat. Another cause of TBIs is a penetrating injury to the head. This type of personal injury is much less common and happens when objects in the car are thrown at a high rate of speed.

The classifications of TBIs

Traumatic brain injuries, commonly known as TBIs, are classified into three main categories. These include mild, moderate and severe. Most people are familiar with a mild TBI, as it’s commonly referred to as a concussion. When this happens, the patient tends to lose consciousness for a very short period of time. In more severe cases, the patient may lose certain cognitive functions or become completely unconscious over a long period of time.

Being involved in a car accident can be scary enough. While you may think of common injuries and wounds involving broken bones and bleeding, that’s not always the case. Sometimes traumatic brain injuries are a result of vehicle accidents. If you have been involved in an accident recently and are experiencing any of the symptoms of a traumatic brain injury, it’s important to go seek professional medical help to get your health situation evaluated.
