Driving in traffic can be a challenging experience, especially if you are not used to traveling in congested areas. Safely driving in traffic requires a combination of skills, awareness and patience.

If driving in traffic is a part of your regular commute or daily routine, you could be at a higher risk of getting into a car accident. But there are steps you can take to drive safely in highly traveled areas to protect yourself and the drivers on the road with you.

Maintain a safe following distance

When driving in traffic, put enough distance between your car and the one travelling directly in front of you. Keeping an appropriate gap between your vehicle ahead gives you time to react to sudden stops or emergencies.

Obey speed limits

In 2021, according to the National Safety Council, 29% of all fatal traffic accidents involved a driver going too fast.  Excessive speed reduces your ability to react to unexpected situations and can increase the severity of accidents. Always adhere to posted speed limits, even if you believe that you can safely drive faster.

Use your turn signals

Proper use of turn signals is a basic but important aspect of safely driving in traffic and in all other driving situations. Signaling your intentions to other drivers helps them anticipate your actions, reducing the likelihood of a collision.

Stay alert and avoid distractions

Texting, talking on the phone, eating or adjusting the radio are all activities that can divert your attention from the road. To drive safely in traffic, focus on driving and if you must use your phone or attend to other matters, pull over to a safe location prior to beginning that activity.

Although you may stay diligent while driving in traffic, others may not be as careful. If you incurred injuries in a crash that happened while you were driving in a congested area, take steps to protect your rights to fair and proper compensation.
