Age Discrimination Continues to Thrive in the Workplace

Posted on in Employment

As the number of seniors in the workplace continues to increase, they continue to struggle with discrimination based on their age, workplace age discrimination is a very serious problem plaguing persons in the 50s and 60s. For some workers, like those in the tech industry, discrimination could actually begin at the age of 40.

Age discrimination can take a number of forms. For instance, the person may not get a job that he's well qualified for and probably more experienced for, just because of his age. He may be passed over for promotions, in favor of younger employees. At the very least, age discrimination could result in condescending remarks, jokes about the employee and his age, and other forms of harassment.

Some industries have a worse record in age discrimination, but such age bias can be found in every industry. Recently, a group of firefighters at the Newport Beach Fire Department sued the city, claiming that they had suffered age discrimination at the department. They claim in their lawsuit that their superiors at the department tried to force them out of the department, because of their age.

The men were frequently left out of the loop when it came to decision-making at the department, and had come under pressure to retire. The lawsuit claims that in far too many cases, firefighters were not informed about decisions in their own departments, and were only informed about these decisions by their subordinates. They were all given not-so-subtle hints that they had no scope to further their careers in the Newport Beach Fire Department. The firefighters in this case are all in their 50s, and have worked at the fire department since 1985.
