December Light Rail Train Accident the Latest to Plague San Jose

Posted on in Personal Injury

mass transit accident, San Jose personal injury attorneys, light rail fatalities, light rail accident, light rail collisionsLight rail train transit is one of the safest forms of travel in the United States. Compared to walking, biking, or driving your own car to and from work or school, your chances of being involved in a mass transit accident of any type are significantly reduced. Unfortunately, while the overall odds are generally in your favor, a string of collisions involving light rail trains have plagued the San Jose area. Consider the following information regarding what you need to know about these types of accidents, the odds of them occurring, and what you can do to protect yourself.

Recent Light Rail Fatalities Involving the VTA

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) provides bus service as well as transit rail lines, offering a fast and convenient form of transportation for people in and around the San Jose area. While generally considered safe, an accident in which a pedestrian was killed is just one of several that have occurred over the past year.

According to an NBC News report, the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital on December 14, 2017 after being involved in a collision which occurred in the early evening hours between Component Drive and North First Street in San Jose. An estimated 30 other passengers were on the train when the accident occurred. It was the second of its kind involving the light rail to happen in less than a week in the same general vicinity. Only three days prior, another pedestrian was killed after being struck near Rosemary and North First streets as the train traveled the Santa Teresa-to-Alum Rock route.

Light Rail Accident Statistics

Unfortunately, these latest accidents were among a string of light rail collisions to plaque the San Jose area in 2017. In July, Mercury News reported on a bicyclist who was killed by a train at Parkmoor Avenue, while in September a pedestrian was rescued after being struck and caught on the blue line tracks at McKee Road and North Capitol Avenue. These accidents would seem to defy national statistics, which have shown light rail transit to have gotten considerably safer since reaching an all time high in the 1990 and throughout the early 2000s.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics showed that during these time frames, an average of more than 30,000 light rail transit fatalities occurred each year in the U.S. Since 2010, these figures have dropped steadily, and currently stand at under 4,000 each year. The reason for the drop is likely greater safety protocols and increased awareness among both riders and those walking or biking within the vicinity of rail tracks and stations.
