Drunk Driving Car Accidents Increase over Thanksgiving Week

Posted on in Personal Injury

CA accident lawyerThanksgiving provides time off during the week and a break from day to day responsibilities. There are likely to be numerous celebrations with family and friends, at which alcohol may figure prominently. Unfortunately, the chances of overindulging are high and despite efforts of law enforcement and traffic safety officials, too many people make the poor choice to get behind the wheel. As a result, drunk driving car accidents and injuries are common Thanksgiving week. The following offers tips to help keep yourself and those you love safe.

‘Blackout Wednesday’

Anytime there is a holiday, there tends to be a corresponding increase in the number of drunk drivers. According to Alcohol.org, people tend to increase their alcohol consumption rate by as much as 33 percent between the months of November through January. Thanksgiving is often seen as the unofficial kick off for the season.

While the emphasis of the holiday is on family and food, the night before is known for drinking. As working adults anticipate long weekends off work and college students get a break from classes, bars are busy the night before Thanksgiving. Drinking rates tend to go through the roof, so much so that it has become known as ‘Blackout Wednesday’. If you intend on going out to your favorite watering hole to take part in the revelry, be careful of how much you drink and take a cab or Uber home if you overindulge. Even if you choose not to imbibe, you need to be careful of other drunk drivers on the roads

Protecting Yourself Against Drunk Driving Accidents

The San Jose Police Department is well aware of the dangers and the increased likelihood of drunk drivers over Thanksgiving. As a result, drivers can expect an increased law enforcement presence on the road, along with sobriety traffic checkpoints throughout the week. There are ways you can help ensure that you and your loved ones stay safe over the holiday. These include:

  • If you are going out, monitor your drinking. Make plans in advance for an Uber or have a designated driver.
  • If you are having friends in for dinner or other celebrations, provide food and plenty of non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Keep an eye on friends and if you notice anyone has too much to drink, take their keys and arrange for other transportation.
  • If you are on the road, be aware of the signs that indicate drunk driving, such as weaving in and out of lanes, erratic movements, or driving either below or above the speed limit.
  • If you suspect another driver is drunk, pull over and dial 911 or notify local law enforcement officials.
