Home Depot Faces Discrimination Lawsuit in California

Posted on in Employment

Home Depot is being named in a workplace discrimination lawsuit filed by a former manager, who alleges that that the home-improvement store chain tried to cut back on insurance costs after the recession, by firing homosexual employees.

According to the lawsuit that has been filed by a former manager at a San Diego Home Depot, the company simply fired older gay employees soon after the 2008 recession, because it did not want to pay out the medical benefits linked to persons who suffer from AIDS and HIV. The former manager was 57 years old, when he was fired by the chain in 2012. He recently filed a lawsuit, alleging that he faced discrimination and sexual harassment by staff. The lawsuit is seeking $100,000 in damages.

According to the lawsuit, the chain was very concerned about its gay male employees, because it would have to pay out more in terms of medical benefits for AIDS and HIV patients. The company was looking at cost-cutting strategies during the economic crisis, and found that firing gay employees would help immensely.

According to the former employee, he was subjected to inappropriate sexual gestures and other types of harassment in the workplace. After managers at the workplace found out that he was gay, he was targeted with sexually explicit photographs. He claims that was wrongfully terminated to save on insurance costs.

The lawsuit does come as a shock to Home Depot, which was recently named as one of the best companies in the country to provide health benefits to homosexual and lesbian workers. The Human Rights Campaign which periodically evaluates companies on the basis of their protection of civil rights rated Home Depot very highly in this matter.
