Pool Safety Tips This Summer

Posted on in Personal Injury

Most summer drowning accidents involve drowning in one's own backyard pool. In other words, your child is at a higher risk of drowning in your own pool or at a friend's pool than any pool in a hotel, resort, campground, or any other commercial site.

This summer, make sure that your children are not playing unsupervised in a pool. It doesn't take a long time for a child to drown. Contrary to what many adults believe, a child who is drowning does not kickup a fuss, or raise a hue and cry. Very often, the drowning is silent and takes just a few seconds. It's typical for a child to drown without the other children in the pool even realizing it.

Make sure that an adult is always supervising the children playing in your pool. If you are the adult supervising the children, ensure that your view of the children is completely free and unobstructed. Avoid distractions while you're supervising children. Keep your phone inside the house, and avoid reading, or being distracted by music or other distractions.

Make sure that the children keep away from the pool drains, and pipes that could cause them harm. Make sure the children are wearing life protection gear and other devices, but don't make the mistake of considering those devices as a guarantee of future and safety. A child needs to be supervised even if he's wearing protection gear. Don't make the mistake of assuming that inflatable vests and tubes and other devices are sufficient protection gear-these are only meant to be used as toys.
