CA wrongful death lawyerMany people throughout the Bay area own boats that allow them easy access to ocean activities and other bodies of water throughout the region. For those that do not, there are numerous charter boat options offering fishing, diving, and pleasure cruising excursions. Unfortunately, a recent boat fire off the coast of Santa Barbara that claimed the lives of several local residents has cast doubt on the safety of these trips. Wrongful death claims could be filed against the charter boat company on behalf of the victim’s families, due to a lack of safety precautions onboard the vessel.

CA Dive Boat Fire Claims Lives of 34 People

A fire that happened on board a scuba diving boat claimed the lives of 34 people over the recent Labor Day weekend. The fire broke out early Labor Day morning, as the vessel was anchored off Santa Cruz Island. The charter originated in Santa Barbara but the majority of people on board were from San Jose and the surrounding Bay Area.

Early reports indicate that the scuba divers were downstairs sleeping when the fire broke out while the boat crew was mainly above deck. Flames quickly raced throughout the below deck cabins, allowing passengers little to no time for escape. While most of the crew survived the blaze by jumping overboard, nearly all of those trapped below went down with the ship.

The mother of the boy had just parked her vehicle and was walking into the business while the child waited in the car. The boy apparently was able to get free of his car seat and opened the car door, jumping out of the parked vehicle. At the same time, a motorist in a 2012 Nissan truck was driving along the road. He was unable to stop in time and ended up striking the child.

CA injury lawyerDespite tougher legislation and the increased efforts of law enforcement officials, distracted driving car accidents continue to wreak havoc on the roads throughout our area. These accidents can cause serious and potentially life threatening injuries for both drivers and passengers, injuries that were otherwise entirely avoidable. San Jose officials continue to be involved in statewide efforts to raise public awareness and by sharing the tragic tale of the loss of his daughter, a local fire captain hopes that he can get motorists to pay attention.

To Raise Awareness, Fire Captain Shares Details of Daughter’s Death

The Captain of the San Jose Fire Department suffered a devastating loss four years on Mother’s Day weekend when his daughter was tragically killed as the result of a distracted driving accident. The still-grieving father now shares his story in the hopes that it will raise awareness and can help save other lives.

Through a California Highway Patrol program titled ‘Impact Teen Drivers’, the captain shares the sad details of the night his 16-year-old daughter was killed. He said she was with a group of friends who were usually chauffeured by a parent, but no one was available that evening to take the girls where they wanted to go. One of the girls was a licensed driver, so with their parent’s permission, they headed out in search of fun on a Saturday evening. It was just a week before the captain’s daughter was set to graduate from her learner’s permit and obtain her own license. Her father had even worked with her in driver training and safety earlier that day.
